Light steered by hand, from a heritage sash window to a coastal bathroom

Timber and aluminium venetians, made to measure — the one interior blind that adjusts light by degree rather than by on or off, which is why it suits the province's oldest windows as well as its steamiest.

Timber, for the windows that predate the glass-box era

Wide 50mm timber slats are the natural fit on a Cape Dutch werf's sash windows or a City Bowl Victorian's original frames — real material against real material, and slats that tilt open for daylight or closed for full privacy without changing the character of a room a fitted roller cassette would flatten. On any gable older than 60 years, Section 34 of the National Heritage Resources Act means Heritage Western Cape sign-off before a fixing method changes the frame — we confirm this before ordering, not after.

Aluminium, for the rooms fabric and timber don't survive

Slim 25mm aluminium slats handle steam in a kitchen or bathroom and salt air near any of the province's coastlines without the swelling, warping or corrosion timber and untreated fixings eventually show. It's the same adjustability argument in a harder-wearing material — tilt for glare-free daylight, close flat for privacy from a neighbouring window.

In the Cape Town Metro & Peninsula, aluminium venetians are the default in any bathroom or kitchen within reach of sea spray, powder-coated against the salt.

In the Cape Winelands, timber venetians are usually the better character match on an established werf's sash windows — provided the fixing method clears heritage sign-off first.

A roller is open or shut by degree; a venetian steers where the light actually goes — the difference matters most on a room with hour-by-hour sun.
